Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet. In 2015, it was estimated that worldwide over US$34 billion was raised this way.

Kickstarter.com is the largest "rewards-based" crowdfunding internet site where inventors can receive the funding necessary to bring their ideas to market by offering their product or services as the reward, often at highly reduced rates, to people who desire the benefit of a particular invention. A Kickstarter campaign is an "all-or-nothing" venture. The inventor establishes a budget goal which is necessary to complete the creation and/or manufacturing of the promised rewards for its backers. No funds are drawn from the backers unless this goal is reached. If the goal is not reached, no money is collected from the backers so the backers loose nothing (except, unfortunately, the product). The inventor also specifies a timeframe, generally 30-60 days, in which to raise the necessary funds. Successful campaigns are funded to the inventors so they can then complete their projects and deliver the rewards to their valued backers.
